Five Tips for Going Green
December 16, 2009 | Gadget
Get the whole family involved in saving energy and conserving natural resources, it’s important for everyone to learn to conserve. Even if global warming is a big hoax, what’s wrong with living cleaner and wasting less?
When you have a family, you know how important it is to be environmentally conscious. After all, you have the future right in front of you and you’re passing the earth onto your kids. Going green doesn’t have to mean giving up conveniences and living with less. You can live as a modern family and still conserve energy and natural resources. This is a great concept for the whole family to embrace and a good way to show your kids that their actions have an impact.
If you make it fun and meaningful, you’ll find the kids wanting to get involved and they’ll probably come up with some great ways of their own for going green. Here are five easy ways to go green today…
Start with the lunchbox. If you have school age kids, this is a great place to go green. When you have to pack a few lunches every day, it is tempting to go for the snack size bags of lunch items, but don’t do it – it’s for the kids! You can save money with this tip, too. Buy the larger size bags of snacks and then use reusable bags to divvy up the goodies. Wash the bags out and put them on a drying rack to use the next day.
The second tip also might go in the lunch bag. Get everyone in your family their own reusable water bottle. Let each child pick out one in their favorite color, so you don’t have any fights about one being cooler than another. Use these in the lunchboxes. Most schools today will allow students to refill bottles from the water fountain, making the bottles great for those hot days in the classroom.
If your kids are like most, they come home from school with a backpack full of papers. After you check through the pile and hang the gold star work on the fridge, put the rest in the recycling bin. Tip number three sounds simple enough, but most people don’t look beyond the newspapers and magazines when it comes to recycling paper. If you don’t want to have an ugly recycling bin in your home, keep a decorative basket in your kitchen for recycling mail, work papers, newspapers and magazines. The more convenient you make recycling, the more likely you and your kids are to stick with the habit.
Tips number four and five have to do with the lights. Change your standard light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs to save energy and money. These bulbs last longer and are continuing to improve with dimmable options and a variety of sizes. The last tip is to remind your kids, and yourself, to turn off the lights when leaving a room. Yes, it is a simple tip, but very effective.
